Is Bison Halal?

Is bison halal? Yes — bison is a halal animal in Islam, provided it is hunted or slaughtered according to the proper Islamic method (zabiha, also spelled dhabiha) with the name of Allah mentioned at the time. Bison are grazing animals, similar to cattle, and are considered pure and permissible to eat when obtained through lawful means.

Why Is Bison Meat Considered Halal in Islam

The Qur’an clearly states that grazing livestock is lawful for Muslims to eat, with a few exceptions:
“Lawful for you are grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you…”Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:1
Bison are non-predatory grazers. They feed on grass, plants, and herbs, and do not have fangs or hunt other animals.

Bison’s diet is almost entirely made up of fresh grass, leafy plants, and shrubs — which is exactly what the Qur’an describes when it permits “grazing livestock” in Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:1. In Islamic understanding, grazing animals are those that eat from the earth’s vegetation and do not consume impure or predatory diets. This natural feeding habit is one of the reasons bison are considered pure (tayyib) and halal to eat, provided they are hunted or slaughtered according to Islamic guidelines.

Islamic Guidelines for Eating Bison

  • Hunted: The hunter must be a Muslim (or from the People of the Book), say “Bismillah” before releasing the arrow or bullet, and ensure the animal dies as a direct result of the shot — not from drowning, scavengers, or other causes. This is part of lawful halal hunting.
  • Slaughtered: If the bison is captured alive, it must be slaughtered according to the zabiha method — cutting the throat with a sharp blade, severing the required vessels, and saying “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.”
  • No Carrion: If the bison is found dead without halal hunting or proper zabiha, it is considered carrion and haram to eat.

Qur’an and Hadith References on Halal Hunting

  • Qur’an 5:1 — “Lawful for you are grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you…”
  • Qur’an 5:4 — “…Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food as provision for you, and for the travellers…” (used by scholars alongside other verses to outline halal hunting rules)
  • Hadith: The Prophet ﷺ and his companions consumed hunted animals when caught according to Islamic rules, showing the permissibility of wild and domesticated grazers.

Health and Ethical Benefits of Bison Meat

Bison meat is naturally leaner than beef, rich in protein, iron, and vitamin B12, and lower in fat. From an Islamic perspective, sourcing bison meat through halal-certified farms or trusted Muslim hunters ensures that the food is both halal and tayyib (pure and wholesome).
