Why Is Deer Halal
In Islam, wild land animals that are not predators (i.e., do not have fangs or hunt other animals for food) are generally permissible to eat. Deer fall into this category. Their diet is made up almost entirely of fresh grass, leaves, and other vegetation — exactly what the Qur’an describes when it permits “grazing livestock” in Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:1. In Islamic understanding, grazing animals are those that eat from the earth’s greenery and do not consume impure or predatory diets. This pure feeding habit is one of the reasons venison is considered halal, provided the meat is obtained through the proper Islamic method of slaughter (zabiha, also spelled dhabiha).
Islamic Guidelines for Deer Meat
Hunted: The hunter must be a Muslim (or People of the Book), say “Bismillah” before releasing the arrow or bullet, and ensure the animal dies from the shot — not from drowning, being torn apart, or other causes. This falls under the Islamic principle of halal hunting, which combines lawful prey with proper invocation of Allah’s name.
Slaughtered: If the deer is captured alive, it should be slaughtered by cutting the throat with a sharp blade while saying “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.”
No Carrion: If the deer dies before proper hunting or slaughter, it becomes haram to eat.
Qur’an and Hadith References on Halal Hunting
- Qur’an 5:1 — “Lawful for you are grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you…”
- Qur’an 5:4 — “…Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food as provision for you, and for the travellers…” (used by scholars alongside other verses to outline halal hunting rules)
- Hadith: The Prophet ﷺ and his companions consumed hunted game, such as gazelle and rabbit, when caught according to Islamic rules — supporting the permissibility of similar animals like moose.
