Is Caribou Halal? 3 Simple Rules to Check Before You Eat It

Is Caribou Halal? 3 Simple Rules to Check Before You Eat It

Is Caribou Halal? Yes, caribou is halal.

Caribou are plant-eating animals. They are known to eat grasses, forbs, fungi, lichens, shrubs, leaves, mushrooms, berries, willow, flowers, herbs, and sedges, depending on the type of caribou and the season. Environment and Climate Change Canada notes that lichens are especially important for some caribou in winter. They are not predator animals.

So the animal itself is halal. The next question is: was the caribou hunted or slaughtered in the proper Islamic way?

If the Caribou Is Hunted

If caribou is hunted, the hunter should say Bismillah before releasing the arrow, firing the shot, or sending the trained hunting animal.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“So eat what they catch for you, but mention the Name of Allah over it…”

Qur’an 5:4

This verse is about lawful food and hunting with trained hunting animals, while mentioning Allah’s name over the hunt.

The Prophet ﷺ also gave clear guidance about hunting. In Sahih al-Bukhari
he taught that if a trained hunting animal is released with Allah’s name mentioned, the hunted animal may be eaten. But if another hunting animal joins the hunt and Allah’s name was not mentioned over it, the meat should not be eaten. The same hadith also mentions that if an animal is found in water after being shot, it should not be eaten because the hunter cannot be sure what caused its death.

In simple terms:

  • Say Bismillah before the hunt.
  • The caribou must be killed by that halal hunt.
  • If it is still alive when reached, it should be slaughtered properly.
  • If it died from another cause, such as falling, drowning, or another animal killing it, it should not be eaten.

If the Caribou Is Captured Alive

If the caribou is captured alive, it should be slaughtered according to the zabiha method.

This means using a sharp blade, cutting the required vessels, allowing the blood to drain, and mentioning the name of Allah at the time of slaughter.

Once the animal is alive and under control, it should be slaughtered properly.

If the Caribou Is Found Dead

If a caribou is found dead in the wild and there is no clear halal hunting or slaughter, it is not halal to eat.

The Qur’an forbids animals that die without proper slaughter or proper hunting, including animals killed by a fall, a blow, or another animal, unless they are reached while still alive and slaughtered properly.
Qur’an 5:3

This is an important lesson: halal is not only about what kind of animal it is. It is also about how the animal was treated and how it died.

What If a Non-Muslim Hunts the Caribou?

If a non-Muslim hunts the caribou and does not say Bismillah before the shot, then the meat is not halal.

The animal itself is still a halal animal, but the meat was not obtained through halal hunting. For hunted meat to be halal, Allah’s name must be mentioned before the hunt.

Simple Answer

Caribou is halal. Muslims can eat caribou meat if the animal was hunted or slaughtered properly.

If it was hunted, the hunter should say Bismillah before the shot or before releasing the trained hunting animal. If it was captured alive, it should be slaughtered according to zabiha. If it was simply found dead in the wild, it should not be eaten. If a non-Muslim hunted it without saying Bismillah, it is not halal.
